How Can I Earn Extra Cash While In College?

Is your wallet empty again? Your money just doesn’t go as far as it used to.

Now that you’re in college, you need money for practically anything. If you find yourself coming up short every paycheck, don’t call mom and dad. Save that humiliation for your strange roommate.

How Can I Earn Extra Cash While In College?

Solving this problem just takes a little time, a little investigation and a bit of the entrepreneurial spirit. In no time at all, you’ll be rolling in the dough.

Tutoring and Note-Taking

All that studying you’re doing should be paying off soon. In the meantime, you can make it easier for others to achieve their academic goals, while earning some cash at the same time. If you have an interest in teaching others, you may be suited to becoming a tutor. Tutors work with students of all ages. Your college may have a tutoring service, or you can apply online to be matched with students in need.

College takes all kinds, and that means that there are students out there with more money than you. If you have some extra time and a few skills, you might be able to market your services to your peers. For a nominal fee, offer to do their laundry, grocery shopping or cooking for them. It would likely be a lot cheaper for them to hire you than to use a formal service. And these tasks can be done fairly easily at the same time you do them for yourself. Don’t forget to consider exchanges in-kind, as well. If you have a reliable car, offer to pick up food off-campus if they’ll pay for your meal.

Small businesses based on selling handmade products used to be really hard to start. If you have a crafty style, you’d be surprised how big of a market you have at your disposal. All you need is to know what you’re willing to make, and a profile on an ecommerce site like Etsy. You don’t even have to be particularly talented. If you have a razor-sharp wit and the ability to put together a few graphics, you can sell your t-shirts and other designs on a CafePress. And with the closing of Regretsy, a blog designed to mock poor designs sold on Etsy, you can rest assured that any DIY disasters you create while developing your business will remain hidden.

Plasma and Scientific Research

If all fails, you can sell yourself. Sort-of. Medical researchers are looking for young, strapping (and strapped) college students. Your robust, good health may be just the ticket for solving your financial woes. First, you can sell your blood plasma. It’s not quite as demanding as donating blood, since they return the blood cells back to your body. For an hour or two of your time, you can earn about $35.

Done twice a week while you read or browse your phone, and you’ve got a tidy chunk of change. If donating plasma isn’t for you, check out the flyers for scientific studies that cover your college notice boards. Chances are, there’s something there that applies to you. You may be required to perform some actions or take a drug, but you can also make some decent money while helping researchers develop the next miracle treatment.

College is expensive. Almost everything about college life costs money. But it’s good preparation for adult life, which is even more expensive. If you learn to keep your finances solvent now, you’ll get valuable practice and build skills that will last you a lifetime.
