Google Launches Free Tool To Let You Run Your Own Online Courses

Google is well-known for projects with unexpected origins. It’s almost natural, then, that the code Google used to build a web course has led to a full-fledged tool for online education.

Google Course Builder intro

From the Course Builder home page:

Course Builder is our experimental first step in the world of online education. It packages the software and technology we used to build our Power Searching with Google online course. We hope you will use it to create your own online courses, whether they’re for 10 students or 100,000 students. You might want to create anything from an entire high school or university offering to a short how-to course on your favorite topic.

Prerequisites for using Course Builder

The current version of Course Builder is designed for technically-savvy course designers. In particular, we expect the following from users:

  • Experience creating course material either for a traditional live classroom or for a more traditional online class.
  • HTML familiarity.
  • JavaScript familiarity, particularly JavaScript arrays, simple objects, and regular expressions. Of these, regular expressions tend to be the biggest stumbling block. The Mozilla Developer Network has an introduction to regular expressions.
  • App Engine familiarity is a plus, but it’s not necessary.
